It tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. The title is taken from a 17th century poem written by John Donne. The title means that the tolling of church bells, which signified the death of another human life, is a toll for each of us, as we are all bound together.
